October, 2017 – Another Chattanooga group has fallen in love with Poggio Verde
Seven of us from Chattanooga kept hearing people here talk about how wonderful Poggio Verde is. We decided to give it a try and it exceeded our expectations. I️ would recommend it to everyone.
From the moment we arrived Gretchen and Luigi made us feel totally relaxed and at home. We enjoyed great food, wine, conversation and relaxation at the villa. We felt more like we were staying at a friend’s house than in a hotel or a bed and breakfast.
We have taken several trips together and were tired of what we call the “forced marches”- either living out of a suitcase or getting up every day or so and having to pack up, burn time and energy getting to another place, finding where you were going to stay and finding where and what to eat. Gretchen and her wonderful staff take care of all this for you. You start the day with a freshly cooked breakfast at the villa. Their comfortable van picks you up right at the door to the villa, takes you to the town and sights you have chosen in advance to see, drops you off for tours, sightseeing and shopping, picks you up to take you to a local restaurant, drops you off again and then takes you back to the villa.
The return to the villa was not the end of the fun for the day, for us it is when some of the most enjoyable time began. First we would walk around the grounds. The cocktail hour and fresh appetizers in the living room followed. After that, we were off to the dining room for freshly prepared Italian cooking, good wine and wonderful conversation.
Before the trip, Gretchen had given a number of different itineraries to choose from. She then made all the arrangements, including local guides in several places. On one trip I️ asked her about a place that was not on the list of available trips she had given us. I️ don’t believe she had ever been to the town we wanted to see and I️ know she had no idea about the factory we wanted to see. Rather than saying, “sorry we don’t go there”, “ you should have planned it in advance” or “maybe we’ll see that the next time you come,” she arranged for another driver and lined up a tour for the men. It was wonderful. I️ think the women also enjoyed a day without us.
My only complaint was that the week went to fast. We especially would have loved to have a day just to hang around the villa.

August, 2016 – Unforgettable! Do not miss a chance to stay here
Il Poggio Verde is an incredibly spacious villa situated in close proximity to Milan, Lake Como and many other wonderful destinations. Our family stayed for a week in August with another family of four. We had 4 kids between us, ages 10-13. The swimming pool was gorgeous and immaculate. The kids enjoyed the ping pong and the foozball in the game room. There is a giant screen with a projector in the parlor so we had nightly movies in this home theater by connecting our laptop to the projector. The kitchen was fully stocked and we enjoyed both cooking at home, fine dining locally and even one night hired a chef to cook for us. The grounds and gardens were beautiful and well maintained. We had planned to do day trips daily but couldn’t resist the charms of the villa and spent two full days lounging by the pool. Angeline was extremely helpful with suggestions, dinner reservations, and answering questions as they came up. We have been traveling in different European countries with our friends for five years in a row now and this was far and away our best experience. You won’t regret it. Ciao Il Poggio Verde- we already miss you!!

August, 2015 – A Truly Fantastic Stay
Words cannot describe what a beautiful, unique, historic, charming place this is. We were two families with children ranging in age from 4 to 14, and each and everyone of us had a lovely time both a the villa and also in the activities around. Gretchen was very helpful providing us with some excellent recommendations in the vicinity.
June, 2015 – Wonderful Stay at Poggio Verde
We were four golfing couples from South Africa looking for a luxury villa in Italy not too far from Lake Como and within easy reach of Milan Airports and with a number of premiere golf courses in the close proximity.
We live on a golf estate in CapeTown and wanted the same feeling of space and a certain level of luxury that we have become used to at Steenberg in the Cape. We very fortunately stumbled across the Poggio Verde website and immediately liked the look of the villa, the large beautiful grounds and a magnificent terrace overlooking a splendid Olympic size pool. It had four large airconditioned bedrooms en suite that were an absolute prerequisite during an abnormally hot Italian Summer.
Once we made contact with the owner Gretchen directly on E Mail, we knew we had made the right choice. Gretchen was so helpful in planning our eight day stay and being a golfer herself she not only put us in touch with four great golf courses she even booked them for us. Also being English speaking was such a bonus in terms of our communication and finalizing bookings for Michelin Star restaurants and other activities.
Our main concern, being a golf trip, was that the quality and the proximity of the courses were right. With Gretchen’s help we played Milano, Villa D’ Este, Bergamo and Monticello. They were all good but Milano and Villa D’ Este were magnificent and the lunches after golf most memorable.
The villa Poggio Verde is situated about an hour from Milan and about 45minutes from Como, all the courses were between 20 and 40 minutes away by car. Off peak driving to and from the villa was a pleasure but do allow extra time when travelling early morning or late afternoon. In addition to the courses we played there are at least 5 or 6 other top courses nearby that would be great to play.
In summing up, it is never easy to please eight people of a certain age in terms of tourist venues and the right accommodation but for us Poggio Verde ticked all the boxes and I ended up being a very popular ‘Tour Leader’.
May, 2014 – Magical Poggio Verde!
Poggio Verde is a magical experience! Open your bedroom window to a treetop view of the Italian countryside accompanied by songbird chorus. Sip espresso a private, peaceful garden or amble over verdant grounds. Cook in a spacious modern kitchen. Relax surrounded by historic paintings, sculptures, books, and tapestries. The marbles of Milan are nearby: The Last Supper, Duomo, LaScala. Poggio Verde is a privilege to experience and worthy of every euro!

May, 2014 – A perfect location for family reunion
I am Italian, living in Boston for few years now. In Poggio Verde, a simply elegant and beautiful home surrounded by a large green park and large old trees and gardens, I have found the perfect site for my Italian holidays, visiting family and friends. This tranquil place gives you a great sense of being away from it all, yet you are less than one hour from Milan. We have been here on many occasions both before and after the recent restoration work was carried out. The owners have taken great care to modernize the villa to an excellent level, adding air conditioning, refurbishing the parquet and marble floors, adding bathrooms to each bedroom, installing top-notch wifi…. But in this process, one can see wherever one looks that they’ve paid great attention maintaining the villa’s authentic 18th century charm. A lot of attention has been paid to details. The very ample, sunny kitchen is the heart and soul of the house, where the large marble island, the big old table, the large windows and handy kitchen garden make it the ideal place to have my family over from Milan and spending time together. Outdoors there is a large covered porch for outdoor dining that looks out over the gorgeous property to Milan (on clear days!). We are active people so we enjoy the the huge swimming pool, even from here there is a great view! But one my favorite things to do in Poggio Verde is to stroll out the back door and wander down to the Roccolo garden. Here there is a charming informal flower garden designed by one of Gretchen’s closest friends: this is really a wonderful place to sit on the grass or at the little table with a book or just be with friends. Or do a bit of gardening if you miss your own!

September, 2013 – Extraordinary vacation spot
We have made many trips to Italy over the years and this remains one of my favorite spots to visit. The villa is beautifully decorated, the grounds are gorgeous, the amenities are all top-notch, the hostess couldn’t be more helpful. There are plenty of activities in the area (Lake Como, Milan, several lovely hilltop villages, hiking, etc.) but it’s also a particularly great spot for gathering with friends and family and cooking together in the stunning kitchen, chatting, taking walks or just getting some “away” time and catching up on reading.
We already have our next trip to Poggio Verde booked for the fall of 2014 and I can’t wait!

April, 2014 – Fabulous villa with picturebook setting
Our first view of this spectacular country villa took our breath away. It is like something from a Merchant-Ivory film, with magnificent vistas to the Italian Alps to the north from a private hilltop. The house, dating back to the 15th century and filled with period furniture, books and art, is at once historic and 21st century up-to-date, with huge newly renovated bathrooms and a gourmet kitchen. All was clean and comfortable. The owner provided information about excursions to local farms for fresh goat cheeses, honey and jams. There is a delightful “deli” at the base of the hill in the charming town, where we picked up fresh and delicious brioches, breads and other pastries for daily breakfasts — and the best gelato ever! There is also a modern supermarket nearby for all cooking needs. The villa is close to many parks and historic towns — for day-trips and excursions helpfully recommended by the owner. We rented bikes and rode along the Adda river (crossing it on a boat invented by Leonardo da Vinci!), hiked to a monastery above a nearby lake, visited the town of Monza with its cathedral containing the Iron Crown of Lombardy (with which Napoleon crowned himself) and a wonderful museum, and had a delicious meal at a local agriturismo garden center restaurant. From the villa it is an easy drive to towns such as Bergamo and to Lake Como for day trips. We also enjoyed just relaxing at the villa, exploring the grounds, with a formal garden of gorgeous roses and walks beneath tall ancient trees. Local birdlife included a cuckoo who serenaded us intermittently all day! Customer service was excellent and the owner was eager to make our visit memorable and fun, taking into account our interests and physical abilities. We wholeheartedly recommend this property to our friends and relatives and hope we may return some day. It would be perfect for a family vacation or reunion.

October, 2013 – Gorgeous property with beautiful views.
Gorgeous property with beautiful views. The rooms in this exquisite villa are spacious and decorated to perfection with authentic Italian charm. When my husband and I were sitting out on the terrace sipping a cocktail while overlooking the beautiful grounds it was sublime. This Villa would be ideal for a family or several couples. The owners are wonderful, and the property is immaculate and well taken care of. I highly recommend!

Life at the Villa last fall, 2014, was more than we could have ever envisioned. Italian in every sense… Exciting yet peaceful, on the go to “see” , yet time to relax and “just be”, delicious food, not over done, just enough to absorb the taste, interesting, enlightening table conservations…… An experience we look forward to having again, and again. A truly lovely way to enjoy and visit Italy. Thank you Poggio Verde. Martha E
